State secondary school in Canals, Valencia
STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL | CANALS | VALENCIA | SPAIN
SEPTEMBER 2009 | COMPETITION. 1st price architectural proposal | Aproximate budget: 4.566.010 €
In collaboration with Francisco Prats and Vicente Llorens Architects.
The new school ‘FRANCESC GIL is located in the municipality of Canals (Valencia), on a plot of 7. 337’70 m². The plot is located on the southern edge of the term, with good communication to the city centre and good connection with the HP-40 highway linking Ontinyent-Alcoy-Alicante interior A-35 motorway.
Our proposal is based on pragmatism as a strategy of design. On the one hand the use of a module to define the spaces and generate the structure, which allows a significant degree of flexibility, making the building measurable and controllable and allowing the possible standardization of constructive elements; on the other hand, through the adequacy of the design, geometry, orientation and the construction of the building to the climatic conditions it seeks to obtain the level of comfort. In this sense, the illumination, ventilation and natural lighting of the pieces are studied according to bioclimatics.
Functionally speaking the Institute consists of two volumes separated by the lobby. These two volumes are placed close to the North facade of the site, so it is released as much as possible of playground space to the South. Therefore the building protects the students open spaces, while allowing the best illumination of it. Align the building to the North facade provides programmatic spaces with North-South orientation.
